A townhouse is a two or three story home which shares its side walls with other such homes. Often there are six townhouses per building. On many occasions, they have the unusual shape of 20 feet wide by 40 feet deep. This may seem strange, but it allows as much as 2400 square feet (20ft x 40ft x 3 floors) of living space. Also, there is very little exterior to maintain.
The down side to townhouses is that they are not single family homes . As good as the previous paragraph sounds, some people are enamored with the idea of a house surrounded by a big lawn, like a king in his castle.
